چکیده

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of two important factors: light and water availability on the leaf characteristics and the growth of plants. Seedlings of Quercus suber were grown under controlled conditions (greenhouse) with three light treatments (100, 27 and 3 % of incident light, open, shade and deep shade; respectively) and with daily irrigation. Since middle spring, one half of the seedlings were not watered, so we had two water treatments (water and no water) within each light treatment. We studied the photosynthetic response to light by light curves using an IRGA (infra red gas analyser). Leaves under deep shade showed lower values of light compensation point (LCP), light saturation point (LSP), photosynthetic and respiration rates per leaf area (Rarea, Aarea), N and C content per leaf area (Narea y Carea) and leaf area than leaves under shade or open. However, leaves under deep shade showed a higher photosynthetic rate per unit dry mass (Amass), specific leaf area (SLA), and N concentration than leaves in shade or full light treatments. Water limitation induced a lower quantum yield (Φ), LSP, photosynthetic and respiration rate (per unit area or dry mass), gsarea, N concentration (per unit area or dry mass), photos-ynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) and chlorophyll index. However, the leaves of plants under water limitation showed a higher water use efficiency (WUE). An interesting result was that plants under deep shade treatment did not show any differences between water and non-watered treatments in physiological traits, possibly indicating a beneficial effect of deep shade on drought resistance. The simulation of carbon balance at leaf level was very well correlated with the relative growth rates (RGR) of seedlings, indicating that the leaf characteristics (variables obtained by the light curves and SLA) may be a good predictor of the relative growth rate under contrasting light and water conditions.

Effect of gibberellic acid on some fluorescence and chlorophyll characteristics of Cyclamen persicum Mill. seedlings under different light regimes

The use of growth regulators and light quality change are two methods to improve plant performance. Therefore, a factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design. Factors included three light modes (greenhouse light (control) and LED combination light of white: red: blue as 70: 10: 20 and 40: 40: 20 ratios) and gibberellic acid in four concentrations (0, 20, 40 and 60 mg/l)....

Responses of Quercus Suber Seedlings under Different Light and Water Treatments. Greenhouse and Field Experiments

The objective of this study is to understand the response of Quercus suber seedlings to light and water, two limiting factors of their growth and survival in Mediterranean woody plants. Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to contrast the results from both types of experiments. At the greenhouse experiment, Quercus suber seedlings were grown at three treatments of light (3%, 27% and ...

Light response of hydraulic conductance in bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) leaves.

A four- to seven-fold enhancement of leaf hydraulic conductance by light has been reported in three temperate tree species. The enhancement occurs in the liquid-flow pathway between the petiole and the site of water evaporation. The enhancement occurs within 1 h, and dissipates in darkness over a period of 1 to 10 h depending on species. Here we report light-induced enhancement of leaf hydrauli...

Diverse Responses of Maple Saplings to Forest Light Regimes

Seedlings of 11 species of forest maples (Acer L.) were grown outdoors from budburst to senescence under three light regimes: ‘gap centre under clear skies ’ (approx. 20% open sky irradiance; red:far-red ratio ̄ 1±12) ; ‘gap centre under cloudy skies ’ (1±5%, ratio ̄ 1±03) ; and ‘gap edge’ (2±5%, ratio ̄ 0±6). Seedlings grown under the gap centre (clear sky) regime had significantly greater height...

Interactions of drought and shade effects on seedlings of four Quercus species: physiological and structural leaf responses.

Here, we investigated the physiological and structural leaf responses of seedlings of two evergreen and two deciduous Quercus species, grown in a glasshouse and subjected to contrasted conditions of light (low, medium and high irradiance) and water (continuous watering vs 2-months drought). The impact of drought on photosynthetic rate was strongest in high irradiance, while the impact of shade ...
